Dear Illinois Eastern Community Colleges faculty, staff, students, and community members:

In light of the recent “shelter in place” order from Governor Pritzker, Illinois Eastern Community Colleges will be altering our previously announced course of action.

  1. All college buildings will be closed to the public and most employees until April 8.  Administrative offices will be available via phone, email, and video conferencing only.
  2. Online courses will proceed as scheduled; however, all of our labs and CTE classes that we had planned to continue face-to-face will be moved online or postponed.  Please consult your instructor or www.iecc.edu/covid about details related to your class.  If you have difficulty logging in, please contact the helpdesk: visit www.iecc.edu/helpdesk, email helpdesk@iecc.edu or call 618/395-5299 or 855-519-4357 (Toll Free) to request technical support.
  3. If you do not have internet access, please start by contacting your faculty member to understand the technology needs of the class. In some cases technology through smart phones, tablets, etc. may be sufficient to support online learning. If you do not have access to internet, you may have free or low-cost resources available to you from an internet provider.  Please go to https://www.iecc.edu/students/ for more details and answers to other frequently asked questions.

The intent in all of these steps is to reduce the risk of spreading the virus with the well-being of our students and employees in mind.  We will continue to watch, listen, and act accordingly.

Sincerely,
Marilyn Holt

As I indicated in my correspondence yesterday, we would wait to make any changes to our instruction until advised to do so by area health officials.  That advice has now been given by one of our local health departments which has recommended that local schools pause delivery of instruction to safeguard the well-being of their students and families.

As a result of this recommendation, Illinois Eastern Community Colleges is taking the following measures to protect our students, faculty and staff and to do our part in slowing the progression of the virus through our local communities:

  1. All instruction for the week of 3/16 to 3/20 is SUSPENDED.  During this time, our faculty and staff will work to migrate course material to the online environment.  This time is essential as it will allow us to work to ensure that the quality of our educational services are not diminished.
  2. During this week, all four IECC colleges and the District Office will remain open and faculty and staff will be on site to continue to assist and serve our community. Our libraries, learning skills centers, fitness centers/pools and cafeterias will be open.  Certain restrictions regarding occupancy may apply.  College staff will be available to assist students who may need help accessing Entrata or Canvas.
  3. Beginning the week of Monday, March 23 and running through April 6, most IECC classes will be moved to an online format.  We will revisit this decision weekly and adjust this timeline as circumstance in our local communities dictate.  There are certain labs, clinicals, and technical courses in which a physical presence is essential.  Beginning 3/23, those courses will continue to meet face-to-face unless otherwise noted.  A complete list of courses that will be moved online and those which will remain face-to-face will be posted no later than 3/18/2020 on our website at www.iecc.edu/covid  or you can call your college switchboard and they will be able to direct you accordingly.
  4. Our help-desk and technical support staff will be available to assist students, faculty and staff who may need support with online instruction.  Please visit www.iecc.edu/helpdesk, email helpdesk@iecc.edu or call 618/395-5299 or 855-519-4357 (Toll Free) to request technical support.
  5. Unless otherwise specified, all on-campus college events scheduled for the week of 3/16 will be postponed.  These events will be rescheduled as circumstances permit.

The intent in all of these steps is simply to reduce the risk of spreading the virus with the well-being of our students and employees in mind.  We will continue to watch, listen and act accordingly.  Additional information will be sent via e-mail or will be posted to our website at www.iecc.edu.

Sincerely,
Marilyn Holt

News of the spread of COVID-19 (coronavirus) is at the forefront of conversations across the country.  District and college leadership have been receiving regular updates from the Illinois Department of Health (IDPH), the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), our local health departments, and the Illinois Community College Board.  They have provided invaluable information to us about how to proceed in light of this quickly developing situation.

This morning, leadership from the colleges and the District Office came together to discuss contingency planning in the event we are required to make adjustments in the delivery of our educational service.  There are a few key points from this meeting that I would like to share with you:

  1. There are no documented cases of the virus in our district or in our surrounding counties.

  2. Although many universities are already adjusting their instructional delivery, most of these are universities with faculty, students and staff who travel internationally regularly.

  3. We are being advised that the best course of action for IECC is to continue with preventative measures.  These preventative measures can be found on the CDC website by clicking here https://www.cdc.gov/nonpharmaceutical-interventions/workplace/index.html.  We will continue to use enhanced disinfecting procedures similar to those we employ during the flu season.

  4. We have received word that members of the GRAC conference can expect interruption of spring competition.  We do not yet know if this is cancellation or suspension.

  5. Effective immediately, IECC is cancelling all non-competitive college-related travel until April 3rd.  This decision will be re-evaluated weekly.  Anyone with travel plans that are affected by this decision should speak with your college president or district administration.

Any future action taken by IECC or our four colleges will be based on facts and in careful consultation with the health officials mentioned above.  College and District Leadership has already prepared contingency plans in the event we need to practice social distancing and virtualize our instruction as some other colleges and universities have done.  We will be providing updates regarding our plans surrounding COVID-19, which can be found here www.iecc.edu/covid.

Sincerely,
Marilyn Holt
