Literacy

Frontier Community College is able to provide free literacy services throughout the IECC district, thanks to an Adult Volunteer Literacy (AVL) grant awarded by the Secretary of State and Illinois State Library Literacy Office.  The AVL program not only provides literacy tutoring to individuals in need, but also recruits volunteer tutors to carry out the initiative.

The Adult Volunteer Literacy program serves individuals throughout the district who are in need of literacy tutoring.  Learners must be at least 17 years of age, not currently enrolled in school, and test below a 9th grade level in reading, writing, and/or math.  The program provides assistance in the areas of reading, writing, speaking, and math.

Tutoring services are provided to learners through the help of trained, unpaid volunteer tutors. Tutors are carefully matched with learners in their local community and can volunteer as little as one hour per week.  Tutors must be at least 18 years of age and must possess a high school diploma (or equivalent).
