IECC is committed to providing support in the form of accessible facilities, individualized plans, and reasonable accommodations to students who meet the requirements of a person with a disability according to Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and The Americans with Disabilities Act as amended. 

Guidelines for Requesting Reasonable Accommodations for Students with Disabilities

In order to be considered eligible for reasonable accommodations, a student must submit the following to the campus coordinator:

  • In the case of a physical disability, neurological disability, or emotional disability, a current medical evaluation completed by a licensed physician is required. A current medical evaluation is one which has been completed within two calendar year of the initial request for reasonable accommodations.
  • In the case of a learning disability, a current psycho educational evaluation completed by a psychologist licensed by a state board of examiners in psychology or certification by a state department of education in psychology is required. The psychologist must provide his or her license or certificate number in the report. A current psycho educational evaluation is one having been completed within two calendar year of the initial request for reasonable accommodations.
  • In the case of an attention deficit disorder, a current medical and a current psycho educational evaluation are required.
  • A current Individualized Educational Plan (IEP) or 504 plan may be considered appropriate documentation of a disability although students should not expect to receive the same accommodations that he/she received in high school.  A current IEP or 504 is one having been completed within two calendar year of the initial request for reasonable accommodations.

In order for a student to be considered eligible for reasonable accommodations, submitted evaluations must include a diagnostic statement of the specific disability and must contain recommendations for reasonable accommodations which are appropriate to the disability and its effect on academic performance. Each semester, a student should request in writing that the recommendations for reasonable accommodations be made available. All requests should be made at the earliest date possible prior to the beginning of a semester for which accommodations are requested.

The Americans with Disabilities Act Procedure (100.12) provides additional information regarding the process for requesting reasonable accommodations and includes the list of ADA Officers at each facility.

Examples of Reasonable Accommodations:

  • Use of dictionary for homework and tests
  • Alternative exam arrangements (e.g., extra time for exams, private testing location)
  • Written directions to supplement oral directions (test, homework, etc.)
  • Additional time to read extensive homework assignments

Access to Facilities by Physically Disabled Persons
Illinois Eastern Community Colleges will take the necessary steps to ensure that any qualified disabled person is neither denied the benefits or excluded from participation in any program or activity provided by the colleges nor denied the use of its services. Because the scheduling of classes may require reasonable advanced planning, disabled persons accepted for admission should identify themselves at least two months before the start of the semester of admission and indicate the nature of accommodations they may need.
