COVID Testing

SHIELD Testing

Weekly testing is mandatory for students and employees who are not vaccinated. (Some individuals are eligible for exemption from testing - contact COVID@iecc.edu if questions or concerns regarding the need for testing.)

While testing is not mandatory for those who are vaccinated, weekly testing is strongly encouraged as the vaccines - while still the most effective tool against COVID - do not eliminate the possibility of acquiring or transmitting COVID. A high number of "breakthrough" COVID cases in vaccinated people have been recorded across the nation. Testing weekly is a good way to protect yourself and others.

IECC has partnered with SHIELD Illinois to provide saliva-based COVID-19 tests to our students and employees.

What is SHIELD Illinois?

SHIELD Illinois is a University of Illinois program whose goal is to share the innovative, saliva-based COVID-19 test developed at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign with the rest of the state. The process requires individuals to simply deposit a small amount of saliva in a vial, which usually takes less than five minutes, and provides results within 24 hours of samples reaching a SHIELD Illinois lab.

SHIELD Illinois has an excellent FAQ that you can read here.

Create your SHIELD IL Portal Account

Testing Process and Steps You Need To Know

Process

  1. Schedule test time in the SHIELD Portal
  2. Don't eat or drink 60 minutes prior to arriving
  3. Arrive at the designated location
  4. Complete sign in and consent form
  5. You will be issued a test and once complete, return as directed onsite
  6. Review results on SHIELD portal once posted and schedule next appointment

Before You Arrive for Testing

Individuals should not eat, drink (including water), chew gum, smoke, or use tobacco products within 60 minutes of providing a saliva sample. Doing any of these things within 60 minutes of providing a sample could produce an inconclusive result and require the individual to re-test. Test results will be posted in the patient portal after the lab results are completed.
