SPECIAL NEEDS STUDENTS
Special needs students, which include students with disabilities, may need special adaptive equipment or special classroom strategies to assist them in succeeding in the classroom environment.

Students with disabilities include: 1) hearing impaired, 2) speech and language impaired, 3) visually impaired, 4) emotionally impaired, 5) physically disabled, 6) learning disabled, 7) other disabilities either temporary or permanent which interfere with learning.

Services May Include
Hearing Impaired

  • Interpreter services
  • Sign language professional
  • Sound enhancement equipment
  • Using visual aids
  • Use tutors and note-takers where appropriate

Speech and Language Impaired

  • Provide opportunities for student to speak in class, but do not force the issue
  • Be patient in allowing the student to express him or herself

Visually Impaired

  • Use large print when necessary
  • Use taped lectures
  • Administer tests orally
  • Use computers and software that is adapted for the visually impaired
  • Use talking calculators
  • Use braille when needed
  • Use tutors and note-takers when appropriate


Physically Handicapped

  • Use calculators, computers, software, keyboards, etc. that are adapted for physically handicapped individuals
  • Arrange seating that is appropriate for the physically handicapped.
  • Use tutors and note-takers when needed

Learning Disabled

  • Use tutors and note-takers when necessary
  • Use tape recorders as needed
  • Allow for visual aids
  • Use appropriate reading equipment
  • Allow students to take tests orally rather than written
  • Modify assignments to meet the needs of the student

  • Dragon Naturally Speaking
  • Jaws screen reader
  • Kruzwell screen reader
  • Large print when necessary
  • Large Screen Monitor
  • Opera Software
  • Screen Magnifier
  • Talking calculators
