OCC Offers Free Basic Computer Classes

Whether you need to update your computer skills for the workplace or just want to learn more for your own enjoyment, Olney Central College’s free basic computer classes are ideal.

Basic Computer Skills I is designed for people who have little or no computer experience. Students learn how to send e-mail, search the web, print digital pictures and complete documents.

A daytime class will meet from 2:30 to 4:35 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday and an evening session will be offered from 6 to 8:05 p.m. on Monday and Wednesday. Classes start June 5.

Longtime computer instructor Frank Hatten said the classes are both informative and fun.

“In the Basic Computer Skills I class, we assume the students have never used a computer before. We emphasize this on the first day,” he said. “We don’t want them to be intimidated or afraid. I try to make it as friendly of a learning environment as I can.”

During the semester, instructors cover all the basics step-by-step from opening files on the desktop to accessing the Internet and conducting searches with Google as well as other search engines. They also assist students as they learn basic word processing and begin working with photographs.

“If they are not familiar with using e-mail, we help them set up a Gmail account they can use through out the semester so they can check and send e-mail,” he said.

Addressing student needs also is important.

“I always ask the students what they want to learn and try to address that in class,” Hatten said. “We want to cover the topics that are most important to them. If students come in wanting to learn something specific, I want them to leave knowing how to do it.”

Those who have already taken the introductory course or have some previous computer experience can increase their knowledge by enrolling in the Basic Computer Skills II class. This course takes students to the next level of computer instruction. Students learn to use advanced Microsoft Word features as well as spreadsheet features from Excel and PowerPoint.

An evening session will be offered from 6 to 8:05 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday.
