26 LTC Athletes Named Academic All-Americans

About one-third of the student athletes at Lincoln Trail College were honored as Academic All-Americans by the NJCAA.

“I think it’s a testament to the amount of focus our players, our coaches, and our faculty and staff all place on the academic side of things,” said LTC Athletic Director Kevin Bowers. ‘Kids obviously come here to play the sport they love, but the reality of it is few are going to do it as a profession. We’ve got to have that plan-B in place and this is just another glowing example of it.”

Baseball players Taylor Lepard, Keaton Sackett, and Shamus Segersten, softball players Lexi Aders and Tessa Laino, and volleyball players Sydney Strange and Haley Towle were First Team Academic All-Americans. To earn that honor, a student athlete has to have a perfect 4.0 GPA.

Three softball players, Sadie Baugh, Shyloh Hearn, and Ariel Povlin, along with baseball player Brad Busald, earned Second Team Academic All-American honors. That achievement requires a GPA between 3.80 and 3.99.

Third Team awards went to baseball players, Corey Chambliss, Kaleb Huxford, Jackson Niehaus, Layne Peavler, Adnan Sator, and Nate Thomas, women’s basketball players Lauren Frederick, Morgan Gallion, and Mya Morgan, golfers James Gibson and Spencer Wicks, softball players Adriana Duvall and Brei Followell, men’s basketball player Atticus Felling, and volleyball player Emily Nehls. Third Team awards go to student athletes with a 3.60-3.79 GPA.

As a whole, Lincoln Trail College student athletes combined for a 3.16 GPA. That marks the seventh consecutive semester student athletes have combined to earn a GPA of at least 3.0.

“I take as much pride in that as any of the championships we’ve won over the years,” said Bowers. “It shows we have a true balance. We can build champions. We can build a Division I athlete. We can move them on and we can still win, but we’re not sacrificing it in the classroom.”

The softball team combined for the highest GPA with a 3.49. The baseball team earned a 3.27 GPA and the volleyball team had a 3.12 GPA. The golf team carried a GPA of 2.96 and the women’s basketball team was right behind with a 2.95 GPA. The men’s basketball team combined for a 2.78 GPA.
