Tiny House, Big Project

Trying to find a project that appeals to people of all ages for a college construction program can be rather difficult. The Construction Technology Program at Frontier Community College (FCC) in Fairfield, Illinois has found a project that not only interested college aged and above students, but also drew the interest of area high school students as well. The program, which began just three years ago, has grown into a popular career and technical program for FCC. Seven FCC students, as well as seven dual-credit students from Fairfield Community High School worked to complete the project since September 2016. Unique to Southern Illinois, the tiny house project has generated interest around the area as many have seen the shows on TV and viewed websites dedicated to tiny houses. Following an open house on April 22 & 23 that saw over 550 people come through to view the tiny house, the tiny house will be auctioned off on May 20, 2017 to raise funds to be used on one (or two!) tiny houses to be built in the 2017-2018 school year.

A public auction will be held on Saturday, May 20, 2017 beginning at 11:00 a.m. to auction off the tiny house. The auction will be held in the Workforce Development Center on the north end of campus. An open house for the tiny house will begin at 9:00 a.m. and continue until the time of auction. Carson Auction and Realty Company of Flora will be in charge of the auction.

Bidding on the tiny house will start at $25,000, and continue until the minimum reserve sale price is met. The successful bidder will be required to place a down payment of 15% of the final sale price the day of the sale. Checks will made payable to Carson Realty Escrow. Carson Auction and Realty reserves the right to refuse any and all offers that do not meet the minimum reserve sale price.

Individual and group tours of the tiny house can be scheduled prior to the day of the sale by calling Frontier Community College at (618) 842-3711.
