NBA's Chris Whitney returns to LTC for jersey retirement ceremony
Washington Wizards guard Chris Whitney was present when Lincoln Trail College retired his jersey on July 31.
Whitney played basketball at LTC from 1989-1991. During that time, he was named First Team All-American. After graduating from LTC in 1991, he transferred to Clemson University in South Carolina where he graduated in 1993. He was a second-round draft pick for the San Antonio Spurs and 47th pick overall in 1993 and has played in the National Basketball Association ever since.
Currently a guard for the Washington Wizards, Whitney holds that franchises record for three-point baskets with 411 and was named runner-up for the 2000-2001 NBA Sportsmanship Award.
Whitney has exhibited leadership skills both on and off the court. He created the C-WHIT (Children with Hope in Tomorrow) Foundation to assist programs dedicated to helping children in Washington, D.C., and his hometown of Hopkinsville, Ky. He also sponsors local basketball teams, has created a computer learning center and provides scholarships to children in his hometown.
Events surrounding his July 31 visit to Robinson included: a free basketball clinic run by area basketball standouts from 1 to 3 p.m. in the LTC gym, with Whitney making an appearance and signing autographs at 2:30 p.m.; cocktails and silent auction fund-raiser at 5 p.m.; and a dinner and awards ceremony at 6 p.m. at the Robinson Elks.
