NJCAA Region 24 Women’s Basketball Tournament: Lady Statesmen lose to SWIC, 80-40
3/8/2012
JOSH BROWN Sports Editor
The stay for Lincoln Trail College's women's basketball team in the postseason was a short one.
As was the case for much of the season, Lincoln Trail struggled to muster much offense Tuesday night, which resulted in an 80-40 loss to Southwestern Illinois College in the quarterfinals of the NJCAA Region 24 Tournament at Belleville.
Finding the basket proved difficult for the Lady Statesmen, as they made just 15-47 field goal attempts in the game (32 percent), which included a 14-31 effort from two-point range (45 percent) and a 1-16 showing from three-point range (6 percent). Southwestern Illinois, on the other hand, found the friendly confines of their home gym to their liking, making 29-46 shots from the floor (63 percent), including 17-24 from inside the arc (71 percent) and 12-22 from long distance (55 percent). The Lady Statesmen were also just 9-15 at the free throw line (60 percent), while SWIC made 10-14 foul shots (71 percent).
The Lady Statesmen were also outrebounded, 33-24 and committed 20 turnovers.
No player reached double figures for LTC, as three players shared scoring honors with eight points apiece. Alex Morgan led the way with eight points, seven rebounds and one assist, while Amber Crumbie totaled eight points, two rebounds, two blocked shots and one steal. DeAsia Phillips netted eight points and one rebound, Justyne Sublett posted seven points, two assists, one rebound, one steal and one blocked shot, Samantha Beatty contributed four points, two rebounds, one assist and one steal, Erica Carpenter added two points and three rebounds, Heather Hansen tossed in two points and Ayanna Smith had one point, three rebounds and two steals.
The season ended much like it began for the Lady Statesmen - with a long losing streak. Lincoln Trail lost their last seven games of the season, which marked the third losing streak of at least that many games this season. The Lady Statesmen opened the year with a 12-game losing streak, then after winning their first two Great Rivers Athletic Conference games, proceeded to lose their next seven in a row.
Lincoln Trail ended their season with a 3-26 record.
Elsewhere in quarterfinal action Tuesday, top-seeded Wabash Valley drilled eighth-seeded Rend Lake, 93-70; third-seeded Kaskaskia edged sixth-seeded John A. Logan, 63-59 and fourth-seeded Olney Central whipped fifth-seeded Southeastern Illinois, 86-57.
Southwestern Illinois advances to take on Kaskaskia at 6 p.m. Friday, while Wabash Valley will face Olney Central at 8 p.m. in the semifinals of the Region 24 Tournament at John A. Logan College in Carterville. The championship game is set for 7:30 p.m. Saturday in Carterville.
