Lady Statesmen lose to Lake Land, 75-68
3/6/2012
JOSH BROWN Sports Editor
When two teams appear to be evenly matched in most aspects on the court, the team that executes the best usually comes away with the victory.
Lincoln Trail College's women's basketball team could not make enough plays Saturday afternoon and fell to visiting Lake Land College, 75-68, in the regular season finale on Sophomore Night at LTC.
A good, old-fashioned shootout took place over the first 20 minutes, with the teams deadlocked in a high-scoring affair, but baskets were harder to come by in the second half and the Lady Statesmen struggled more than the visitors, leading to their sixth straight loss.
"It was definitely two different styles of play in the two halves," LTC head coach Stacey White said. "Both teams wanted it and they were going to get after it and do whatever it took to win. They were able to knock down a couple more shots than we did and that was the difference."
Both teams came out firing in a hotly-contested, fast-paced first half that featured 15 lead changes and four ties.
The lead see-sawed back and forth for the first five minutes, before a 9-0 LTC run put the Lady Statesmen in front, 21-14, with 13:38 to play. Lake Land would close to within two on a couple of occasions, but Lincoln Trail still held a seven-point advantage, 32-25, with 7:23 remaining.
Lake Land answered with a 12-2 run thanks to four three-pointers in a two-minute span to put the Lady Lakers up 37-34 with 5:02 to go. Consecutive three-pointers by Samantha Beatty and Gabrielle Duncan gave the Lady Statesmen a 40-37 lead with 3:53 left, but Lake Land would score six of the next eight points to take a 43-42 lead with 46.5 seconds left. Duncan would then drain another three-pointer for a 45-43 LTC lead with 18 seconds left, only to see Lake Land's Lauren Bogle score with seven seconds left to tie the game at 45-45 at halftime.
Points did not come as easily in the second half, as the teams combined for just 53 after scoring 45 apiece in the first half.
Lincoln Trail held a 49-47 lead following a putback by Kelsie Coleman with 16:16 to play, but the Lady Statesmen would then go almost five minutes without scoring. Fortunately, Lake Land only scored four points in that span to take a two-point lead, so when Justyne Sublett made two free throws at the 9:45 mark, the game was tied at 51-51.
Lake Land would respond with an 8-2 run to take a 59-53 lead with 7:04 to go, but Lincoln Trail would hang around. A three-point play by Sublett closed the gap to 60-58 with 5:34 remaining, but that is as close as the Lady Statesmen would get. A 9-3 run by Lake Land pushed their lead to 69-61 with 3:42 to play and Lincoln Trail would get no closer than five the rest of the way, as Lake Land made six of eight foul shots in the final minute to seal the win.
"I'm proud of the girls and proud they played hard the whole game," White said. "We had consistent effort the whole game, which is something we haven't had much of this season."
After a first half that saw the teams combine to make 15 three-pointers, only two went in after halftime. Lincoln Trail made 7-12 long-range attempts in the first half, but finished the game 7-20 from beyond the arc (35 percent). Meanwhile, Lake Land made 8-18 three-pointers in the first half and ended the game 10-25 from long distance (40 percent).
Lincoln Trail also made 18-48 two-point attempts (38 percent) and were 11-14 at the free throw line (79 percent), while Lake Land made 14-36 shots from inside the arc (39 percent) and knocked down 17-23 foul shots (74 percent).
The Lady Statesmen did outrebound Lake Land, 44-41, while LTC committed 20 turnovers to Lake Land's 19 miscues.
Sublett topped LTC with 20 points, nine rebounds, four assists, one steal and one blocked shot, while Amber Crumbie posted 13 points, three rebounds, one steal and one blocked shot. Ayannna Smith totaled eight points, eight rebounds, two steals, two assists and one blocked shot, Duncan netted eight points, three assists and one rebound, Beatty contributed six points, five rebounds, three steals and two assists, DeAsia Phillips chipped in with five points, one rebound and one assist, Alex Morgan added four points, eight rebounds and two assists, Coleman had two points, four rebounds and one steal and Erica Carpenter had two points, three rebounds and one assist.
Shelby Kohrmann paced Lake Land with 26 points, five rebounds, one assist and one blocked shot, while Bogle totaled 20 points, nine rebounds, six assists and one steal and Victoria Wolke posted 15 points, six rebounds, four assists and two blocked shots.
The Lady Statesmen also lost on Wednesday at Olney Central College, 80-61. The Lady Statesmen trailed 36-24 at halftime, then were outscored 44-37 in the second half.
Sublett led LTC with 19 points, while Phillips was also in double figures with 12. Crumbie and Morgan netted seven points apiece, Carpenter scored six, Smith tossed in five, Coleman added three and Duncan had two.
Alyssa Like led four players in double figures for OCC with 20 points, while Bre White, Jessica Zavoral and Tara Wornica scored 17, 14 and 10 points, respectively.
Lincoln Trail (3-25, 3-13 GRAC) has finished the regular season and will play at Southwestern Illinois College in the first round of the Region 24 Tournament Tuesday at 7 p.m.
"I wouldn't want to have us going into the tournament any other way," White said. "This is the most intensity and passion I have seen in our players and hopefully that continues in the tournament."
