Upset bid falls short for LTC against LLC
3/6/2012 JOSH BROWN Sports Editor
Playing hard has never been a question for Lincoln Trail College's men's basketball team this season.
Lincoln Trail battled Great Rivers Athletic Conference foe Lake Land College Saturday and gave the visiting Warriors everything they wanted for most of the 40 minutes, but the Statesmen faltered late on their way to a 72-66 loss on Sophomore Night.
"I've got nothing but praise on how hard these kids played," LTC head coach Mike Ray said. "I've had more talented teams, but none that played any harder than these kids. They brought it every game and it says a lot about their character to give 100 percent every time out."
The Statesmen couldn't have started much better, as they jumped out to a 9-1 lead on Lake Land, who finished in a tie for first place with Olney Central for the GRAC championship, but Lake Land quickly responded with a 14-2 run to take a 15-11 lead with 13:02 to play.
The rest of the first half was closely-contested, with 12 lead changes and two ties over the final 12 minutes.
Lincoln Trail rallied to take a 24-22 lead on JoJo Hart's three-pointer with 8:39 remaining, but Lake Land would answer with a 6-1 run to take a 28-25 lead with 5:40 left.
Rob Reed would follow with a breakaway dunk following a Lake Land miss, then Teddy Maris scored after a Mike Anderson steal to put LTC back in front, 29-28, with 4:00 on the clock. The lead would see-saw back and forth five times in the final 3:15, with Lake Land grabbing a 34-33 halftime edge on Jomari Bradshaw's putback with 33.4 seconds left.
After Lake Land scored the first basket of the second half, Lincoln Trail went on a 10-3 run that was capped by Anderson's steal and dunk for a 43-39 LTC lead with 16:07 remaining. Lake Land would close the gap to one, but Lincoln Trail countered with a 10-2 run to take a 58-49 lead with 8:56 left.
The runs would continue, this time with Lake Land putting together a 14-4 run to grab a 63-62 edge with 5:00 to play. Seconds later, Lake Land's Devin Bey was whistled for a technical foul, but Ilyas Salsanov would miss both of the foul shots. He would redeem himself, as on the ensuing possession, Salsanov rebounded his own missed three-pointer and put it back in to give LTC a 64-63 lead with 4:30 left. The lead was short-lived, however, as Darrian Gray would tip in his own miss with 3:52 remaining to put Lake Land back in front, 65-64.
Lincoln Trail would answer on Jason Jordan's layup with 3:35 to go, making the score 66-65. However, those were the last points LTC would score, as Lake Land closed the game on a 7-0 run to pull out the victory.
Following a free throw by Abdou-Aziz Thiandoum tied the game with 3:16 to play, then Gray knocked down a floater in the lane with 2:38 on the clock to put Lake Land on top to stay.
The Statesmen still trailed by two with 30 seconds left, but Jordan missed a contested shot from close range and Lake Land knocked down four free throws in the final 17 seconds to seal the win.
"Sometimes you have to give the other team credit and they are a very good basketball team," Ray said. "They hit more threes than we hit and we didn't rebound their misses and that was the difference."
For the game, Lincoln Trail made 27-63 field goal attempts (43 percent), including 22-44 from two-point range (50 percent), but just 5-19 from three-point range (26 percent). Lake Land, meanwhile, was 25-54 shots from the floor (46 percent), which included a 17-38 effort from inside the arc (45 percent) and 8-16 from long distance (50 percent). Lincoln Trail was also just 7-14 from the free throw line (50 percent), while Lake Land made 14-20 foul shots (70 percent).
Lincoln Trail was beaten on the glass, 37-32, but only committed 18 turnovers to 23 for Lake Land.
Reed led LTC with 21 points, five steals, two rebounds, two blocked shots and one assist, while Anderson totaled 12 points, seven rebounds, four assists and three steals. Salsanov posted 11 points, five rebounds and one assist, Maris netted 10 points, three steals, two rebounds and two assists, Hart contributed six points, three rebounds and one steal, Jordan added four points, four rebounds and two assists and Angelo Williams had two points and one rebound.
Orlando Rutledge topped Lake Land with 27 points, five rebounds, two steals and two assists, while Bradshaw posted 12 points, nine rebounds, five steals, one assist and one blocked shot.
This was the final game of the season for the Statesmen, due to NJCAA sanctions that prevent LTC from playing in the Region 24 tournament this season.
"The season is not over until school ends in May," Ray said. "The kids will still go to class and work toward their degrees and we will get them to come to open gym and try to get better."
The Statesmen ended the year with an overall record of 9-19, including 3-13 in the GRAC.
"From when I got here in January to where we are now, we are a much better basketball team," Ray said. "The progress they have made was tremendous. But, next year we have got to replenish the stables - and we will."
