Statesmen fall at JA Logan, 79-70

The effort was much better the second time around, but it still wasn't enough to produce a victory.
Lincoln Trail College's men's basketball had a much better showing in their second meeting with John A. Logan College Wednesday, but still came up on the short end of a 79-70 loss in Great Rivers Athletic Conference play at Carterville. The Statesmen hung with John A. Logan most of the way and trailed by just two, 34-32, at halftime, but John A. Logan outscored LTC 45-38 in the second half to pull away for the win.
In their first meeting in Robinson Jan. 9, the Statesmen were outscored 52-30 in the second half in a 94-72 loss.
Free throws played a big role Wednesday, as John A. Logan attempted 15 more free throws and made 12 more than Lincoln Trail. John A. Logan was 25-39 at the free throw line (64 percent), including 18-24 in the second half. Meanwhile, Lincoln Trail made just 13-24 foul shots (54 percent).
Lincoln Trail tried to counter John A. Logan's advantage at the foul stripe by scoring from long distance, making nine three-point baskets to four for John A. Logan, but still came up a bit short.
Rob Reed led three players in double figures for LTC wit 21 points, 18 of which came in the second half. Teddy Maris tossed in 16 points, while Jason Jordan netted 15 for the Statesmen. Delvon Brown scored all eight of his points in the first half, Jake Frazier chipped in with five, Angelo Williams added three and JoJo Hart had two.
Four players reached double digits for John A. Logan, led by Xavier Jones with 24, including 16 in the second half. Robert Arnold netted 15 points for the Vols, DeShawn Clay tossed in 11 and Qua-Shawn Carpenter scored 10.
Lincoln Trail (6-14, 1-8 GRAC) will play host to Rend Lake College for a GRAC contest Saturday at 4 p.m.
