Statesmen fall to No. 20 OCC, 85-67
1/31/2012
JOSH BROWN Sports Editor
Wins are hard to come by in the Great Rivers Athletic Conference, which makes defending your home court even more important.
Lincoln Trail College's men's basketball team was unable to do that Saturday, resulting in an 85-67 loss to visiting and 20th-ranked Olney Central College.
"Olney is a real good team," LTC interim head coach Mike Ray said. "They exemplify team in every regard. They are on the floor for loose balls, they shot fake and look for open teammates. Those are things we need to get better at."
As has been the case in several games in the second half of the season, Lincoln Trail has been in the lead or close to it, then the Statesmen will have a rough stretch that ultimately proves to be the difference in the game.
Lincoln Trail fell behind 8-3 early, but responded with a 16-6 run that gave the Statesmen their biggest lead of the game, 19-14, with 11:16 left in the first half. Olney Central then scored seven straight to take a 21-19 lead with 10:01 to play, only to see Lincoln Trail counter with a 7-1 spurt to grab a 26-22 lead with 8:54 remaining.
The rough patch that has plagued the Statesmen so many times before happened again, as the Statesmen went scoreless for more than five minutes, while Olney Central piled up 15 to take a 37-26 lead with 3:37 left. In fact, Olney Central outscored LTC 25-9 over the final 8:35 of the half and took a 47-35 lead at halftime.
Lincoln Trail would fight back early in the second half and get within seven, 51-44, with 17:16 to go following a three-pointer and a baseline jumper by Jason Jordan.
Olney Central would counter with eight straight points to spark a 12-2 run, giving the Blue Knights a 63-46 advantage with 12:47 to go. Lincoln Trail would get within 13 on a couple of occasions, but were unable to put a big run together to get back in the game. Olney Central led by as many as 23 in the final minutes before settling for the 18-point win.
"It's frustrating to play with a team, then make the same mistakes over and over again," Ray said. "We missed two layups, the front end of a one-and-one and took three bad shots in that five-minute span (during the OCC 15-0 run). We have got to get mentally tougher and be able to play through adversity."
Olney Central led in almost every aspect of the game, especially shooting the ball. The Blue Knights made 32-68 field goal attempts (47 percent), which included a 28-57 performance from two-point range (49 percent) and a 4-11 effort from three-point range (36 percent). Lincoln Trail shot just 39 percent from the floor (26-67), including 20-40 from inside the arc (50 percent), but just 6-27 (22 percent) from long distance. Olney Central also made 17-29 free throws (59 percent), while LTC was just 9-16 at the charity stripe (56 percent).
Lincoln Trail was also outrebounded 50-40, while turning the ball over 15 times to just 13 miscues for OCC.
The Statesmen had 12 players find the scoring column, but only two reached double figures. Jordan led LTC with 15 points, eight rebounds, two assists, two blocked shots and one steal, while Rob Reed totaled 14 points, five rebounds, two assists, one steal and one blocked shot. Jake Frazier netted eight points and three rebounds, Delvon Brown posted seven points and eight rebounds, Mike Anderson contributed three points, three rebounds and two assists, Isaac Wodajo tossed in three points, Drew Morecraft pitched in with two points, four rebounds and two assists, JoJo Hart collected two points, three assists, two steals and one rebound, Angelo Williams and Christian Jugah added two points, two rebounds and one blocked shot apiece and Ilyas Salsanov scored two points.
Trivante Bloodman paced OCC with 19 points, nine assists and three rebounds, while Keenen Anderson posted 19 points, five rebounds and one steal. John Michael Jarvis totaled 10 points, nine rebounds, three steals and two blocked shots, while Lleon Tillman, Latroi Wright and Ryan Helfert scored eight points apiece.
