Lady Statesmen fall to OCC, 86-66
1/31/2012
JOSH BROWN Sports Editor
It has been a season of streaks for Lincoln Trail College's women's basketball team, with more of it bad than good.
The Lady Statesmen saw their losing streak reach five games following an 86-66 loss to visiting Olney Central College in Great Rivers Athletic Conference play Saturday.
It is the second losing skid of at least five games this season for Lincoln Trail. The Lady Statesmen opened the season with a 12-game losing streak, then followed with two straight wins before their current slide.
A lack of discipline on both ends of the floor contributed mightily to Saturday's loss. The Lady Statesmen struggled to get good looks at the basket and were unable to get in position to keep Olney Central from finding the hoop.
"Our shot selection wasn't very good and we didn't attack the basket like we planned on doing," LTC head coach Stacey White said. "Penetration and kick is what has gotten us open shots and we didn't carry over what we had worked on onto the court. Defensively, we have to learn how to move our feet and get over rather than reaching and slapping. We have to play smarter and that hurt us."
Lincoln Trail got off to a good start, building a 7-3 lead in the first three minutes, but it quickly evaporated. Olney Central tied the game, 8-8, with a three-point play that sparked a 7-0 run and gave OCC a 12-8 lead with 15:00 on the clock. Lincoln Trail would regain the lead, 16-14, on back-to-back three-pointers by Justyne Sublett and Samantha Beatty with 12:44 remaining, but again it wouldn't last long.
A three-pointer by OCC's Alicia Tally put the Lady Blue Knights back in front, 17-16, but LTC would tie the game at 17 and 19 over the next few minutes. Olney Central would take control after that, embarking on a 17-2 run to give them a 36-21 advantage with 5:21 to play. The Lady Blue Knights would continue their first-half barrage and lead by as many as 26, before LTC scored the final five points of the half to make the score 52-31 at halftime.
Olney Central looked to run away and hide early in the second half, leading by as many as 28, but Lincoln Trail would go down swinging. A couple of late runs pulled the Lady Statesmen as close as 18, but the deficit was just too much to overcome.
"This group doesn't give up," White said. "We kept working and did a better job with the original game plan in the second half. We wanted to chip away and we did that in spurts, but every time we did, they would go on a run and we didn't come back and make another one when we needed it."
Sublett topped LTC with 22 points, seven rebounds, two assists and one steal, while Ayanna Smith totaled 10 points, 10 rebounds, three steals and two assists. Gabrielle Duncan posted seven points, seven rebounds, three assists and two steals, Beatty netted seven points, four rebounds and four steals, Kelsie Coleman contributed three points, four rebounds, one assist and one blocked shot, Erica Carpenter added three points and four rebounds and Alex Morgan had two points, five rebounds, one steal and one assist.
All eight players of Olney Central scored at least five points, with six of them scoring eight or more. Alyssa Like led the way with 27 points, 10 rebounds and two assists, while Kelsee Ennis posted 12 points, six rebounds, six steals and four assists.
