Lady Statesmen fall to SIC, 74-64

A continually short-handed Lincoln Trail College women's basketball team hung with visiting Southeastern Illinois College for a half Wednesday, but faltered in the second half on their way to a 74-64 defeat in Great Rivers Athletic Conference play.
The loss was the fourth straight for the Lady Statesmen after they won their first two league games of the season. The Lady Statesmen were also playing without their top two scorers - Justyne Sublett and Erica Carpenter - due to undisclosed reasons, as well as center Amber Crumbie, who is injured.
Both teams scored 33 points in the opening half to head into the locker room tied at halftime, but Southeastern Illinois outscored Lincoln Trail 41-31 over the final 20 minutes to pull out the victory.
Lincoln Trail tried to stay in the game by knocking down outside shots, as they made 9-22 attempts from three-point range (41 percent), but only two of those makes came in the second half.
Southeastern Illinois was efficient shooting the basketball, making 28-53 field goal attempts (53 percent), including 24-39 from two-point range (62 percent) and 4-14 from three-point range (29 percent). The Lady Statesmen, meanwhile, made 24-51 shots overall (47 percent) and 15-29 from inside the arc (52 percent). Southeastern Illinois was 8-14 at the free throw line (57 percent), while LTC made 7-13 foul shots (54 percent).
Lincoln Trail did outrebound Southeastern Illinois in the game, 33-25, but committed 23 turnovers to just 12 for the Lady Falcons.
DeAsia Phillips topped LTC with 17 points, six rebounds and two assists, while Samantha Beatty posted 16 points, five rebounds, two assists and one steal. Alex Morgan totaled 13 points, seven rebounds, one assist and one steal, Ayanna Smith contributed eight points, nine rebounds, three steals and one assist, Gabrielle Duncan netted eight points, four rebounds and four assists and Kelsie Coleman added two points, two rebounds, two assists and one steal.
Four players reached double figures for Southeastern Illinois, led by Kenyatta Drake and Jasherrica Barkley with 18 points apiece, while Tierra Burks and Ashley Morehead each tossed in 15.
Lincoln Trail (2-16, 2-4 GRAC) will try to get back on track when they play host to Olney Central College Saturday at 2 p.m.
