Lady Statesmen crushed by WVC, 95-42
1/25/2012
JOSH BROWN Sports Editor
Going on the road in the Great Rivers Athletic Conference is always tough, but to play a road game without your two leading scorers makes the odds virtually insurmountable.
Lincoln Trail College's women's basketball team took one on the chin Saturday, as they were hammered by host Wabash Valley College Saturday, 95-42.
It was the third straight loss for the Lady Statesmen, who were playing without starters Justyne Subletta and Erica Carpenter for undisclosed reasons, following a 2-0 start to GRAC play.
The Lady Statesmen were doubled up in the first half, 50-25, as Wabash Valley knocked down 20 field goals, including eight three-pointers. Lincoln Trail tried to keep pace by making six three-point baskets of their own, but they were just 2-10 from two-point range in the first half. The second half was worse than the first, as the Lady Statesmen were outscored 45-17. Lincoln Trail made another four three-point baskets after halftime, but were a dismal 1-11 from inside the arc. Meanwhile, Wabash Valley added four threes of their own and were a blistering 15-22 (68 percent) from two-point range in the second half.
Lincoln Trail was also outrebounded 63-24 and committed 20 turnovers to just 15 miscues for Wabash Valley.
For the game, Wabash Valley made almost as many field goals (39) as Lincoln Trail scored points (42).
Leading the way for the short-handed Lady Statesmen - who dressed just seven players for the game - was Samantha Beatty with 16 points, including five three-pointers, four rebounds, two steals and one assist, while DeAsia Phillips posted 13 points, including four three-pointers, two steals, one rebound and one assist. Gabrielle Duncan netted seven points, three rebounds and one assist, Kelsie Coleman contributed five points and three rebounds and Alex Morgan added one point, eight rebounds and one steal.
Wabash Valley had 15 players see action, with 14 of them finding the scoring column. Sarah Thomas topped WVC with 14 points, while Shauna Whitley tossed in 12 points and Bianca King, Emily Brown and Tracee Mitchell netted nine points apiece.
Lincoln Trail (2-15, 2-3 GRAC) will play host to Southeastern Illinois College Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.
