Lady Statesmen lose to SWIC, 87-56

A poor shooting effort put Lincoln Trail College's women's basketball team in an early hole and it kept getting deeper and deeper as the game went on Saturday.
The Lady Statesmen struggled to put the ball in the basket for most of the game, resulting in an 86-56 loss at Southwestern Illinois College in Great Rivers Athletic Conference play. The loss also snapped Lincoln Trail's two-game winning streak to start the conference slate.
Despite their struggles shooting, Lincoln Trail trailed by just eight, 42-34, at halftime, but the Lady Statesmen were outscored 44-22 over the final 20 minutes of the game, allowing SWIC to pull away for the win.
The Lady Statesmen made just 21-56 field goal attempts for the game (38 percent), including 12-34 from two-point range (35 percent) and 9-22 from three-point range (41 percent). Southwestern Illinois, meanwhile, connected on 31-56 shots from the floor (55 percent), which included a 24-44 performance from inside the arc (54 percent) and a 7-12 performance from long distance (58 percent). Southwestern Illinois also made 15-21 free throw attempts (71 percent), while Lincoln Trail was just 5-10 (50 percent) at the charity stripe.
Lincoln Trail was also outrebounded, 41-29, including giving up 16 offensive rebounds, while they also committed 24 turnovers to just 13 miscues for SWIC.
Justyne Sublett topped LTC with 20 points, five rebounds, four assists and two steals, while Samantha Beatty posted 11 points, three rebounds, two assists and two steals. Alex Morgan netted nine points, one rebound and one assist, Ayanna Smith totaled eight points, two assists, two steals and one rebound, Erica Carpenter contributed five points and nine rebounds and Gabrielle Duncan added three points, six rebounds, five assists and two steals.
Lincoln Trail (2-13, 2-1 GRAC) will play at Kaskaskia College Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.
