Lady Statesmen beat John A. Logan, 85-77, to earn first win of season

The drought is over.

Lincoln Trail College's women's basketball team put an end to their season-long losing streak Monday, as the Lady Statesmen downed visiting John A. Logan College, 85-77, in their Great Rivers Athletic Conference opener.

The Lady Statesmen came out firing in the opening half, pouring in 45 points to take a 45-35 lead at halftime. John A. Logan tried to rally in the second half, but only outscored LTC 42-40 over the final 20 minutes, which allowed Lincoln Trail to snap their 12-game losing streak.

Three-point shooting was the key to success for the Lady Statesmen, as they made 10-23 shots from beyond the arc (44 percent), while John A. Logan made just 3-20 shots from long distance (20 percent). Lincoln Trail also made 18-46 shots from two-point range (39 percent), for an overall percentage of 41 percent (28-69).

Justyne Sublett, who missed Saturday's game due to disciplinary reasons, poured in a game-high 33 points to lead the Lady Statesmen. She also recorded seven rebounds, four assists and one steal. Erica Carpenter - in just her second game of the season after sitting out the first semester - posted 20 points, five rebounds, three steals and three assists, Samantha Beatty totaled 11 points, four rebounds, one assist, one steal and one blocked shot, DeAsia Phillips contributed seven points, one rebound, one assist and one steal, Ayanna Smith collected four points, eight rebounds, three steals and two assists, Alex Morgan netted four points, five rebounds and one assist, Gabrielle Duncan added four points, three rebounds, three assists and two steals and Kelsie Coleman had two points and three rebounds.

Four players reached double figures for John A. Logan, led by Kyra Navarrete with 22 points. Tikeyiah Johnson tossed in 19 points for the Lady Vols, Austyn Ridings netted 17 and Jasmine Jordan added 10.

Lincoln Trail (1-12, 1-0 GRAC) will play at Rend Lake College Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.
