Lincoln Trail men come up short on road to Mineral Area, 75-72
12/15/2011
JOSH BROWN Sports Editor
It was a border battle between teams from Illinois and Missouri Sunday, but in the end, Missouri won out.
Four games between junior college men's basketball teams from the two states took place in the Rawlings Junior College Shootout at St. Louis Community College, with Missouri winning three games and Illinois one.
One of the three losses by Illinois squads was suffered by Lincoln Trail College, as the Statesmen fell to Mineral Area College in the final game of the day, 75-72.
The game was close throughout, with four ties and three lead changes, but Mineral Area was able to lead both at the half and at the end. Lincoln Trail was down just one, 38-37, at halftime, but Mineral Area was able to outscore the Statesmen 37-35 over the final 20 minutes to pull out the three-point victory.
"We had two good looks at the end," LTC head coach Kevin Emerick said. "On our last possession, Rob (Reed) missed a shot on a drive, but we got the rebound and Teddy (Maris) had a three from the left wing rim out, then we got the rebound again and T.J. (Grant) had his three rim out at the buzzer. The kids never quit fighting. Mineral Area is a good team. They beat Lewis & Clark the other night by 48 and made 20 threes."
Reed paced LTC with 26 points, five rebounds, one assist and one blocked shot, while Mike Anderson totaled 13 points, five rebounds, three steals, two assists and one blocked shot.
"Rob had another real good game, especially early, to help us get a lead," Emerick said.
Maris posted eight points, four rebounds, two assists and one steal, Jason Jordan netted six points and five rebounds, Oblong product Drew Morecraft collected four points, two rebounds and one assist, Angelo Williams contributed four points and one assist, Grant added three points, four assists, three steals and two rebounds, Ilyas Salsanov recorded two points, five rebounds and one assist, Jake Frazier chipped in with two points and three rebounds, Isaac Wodajo had two points, four rebounds and one assist and Delvon Brown had two points and one rebound.
"Drew played well in the second half and gave us some good minutes to help us get back in it," Emerick said. "Jason hit a couple of big buckets for us late, too."
Jerome Davis led three players in double figures for Mineral Area with 21 points, while Darian Hooker and Randrick Caruthers tossed in 10 points apiece.
Also on Sunday, Kaskaskia College scored the lone win for Illinois, beating host St. Louis Community College, 74-69, while Three Rivers (Mo.) beat Southwestern Illinois College, 85-79 and Moberly Area (Mo.) beat Southeastern Illinois College, 65-53.
Lincoln Trail (4-5) will close out the 2011 portion of their schedule when they play at Danville Area Community College Tuesday, Dec. 20, at 7:30 p.m.
"It is a tough place to play and will be a tough game, but that is why we scheduled it," Emerick said. "The kids have to get through finals this week, then we will have three practices to get ready for Danville. Regardless of our record, I couldn't be happier with the progress the kids have made this semester. They have represented the program well."
