Lady Statesmen whacked by VU, 106-62
12/12/2011

JOSH BROWN
Sports Editor

Another slow start resulted in another lopsided loss for Lincoln Trail College's women's basketball team.

The Lady Statesmen struggled out of the gate and visiting Vincennes University capitalized, sending LTC to a 106-62 defeat Wednesday night.

Two minutes into the game, Lincoln Trail was already behind 6-0. A time-out didn't help, as Vincennes ran off seven more points in a row following the break in action to take a 13-0 lead with 16:30 to play.

Ayanna Smith broke the drought with a basket at the 15:42 mark, but two more VU baskets followed for a 17-2 advantage. The Lady Trailblazers continued to light up the scoreboard, building a 33-11 cushion with eight minutes left in the first half and increased the margin to 56-25 at halftime.

Lincoln Trail tried to make a game of it in the second half, starting on an 11-5 spurt to make the score 61-36, but they would not get any closer. Vincennes outscored Lincoln Trail 51-37 in the second half to run away with the easy win.

Kristien Malone topped the Lady Statesmen with 17 points, while Alex Morgan and DeAsia Phillips tossed in 11 points apiece. Smith netted 10 points, Gabrielle Duncan scored eight, Samantha Beatty and Kelsie Coleman each added two points and Erica Phifer had one.

Five players reached double figures for Vincennes, led by Shanice Gholson's 25 points. Zhanna Chukhrii posted 17 points, Larretha Draughon netted 15 and Skylarr Shurn and Brandi Richardson added 12 points apiece.

The loss was the ninth straight to start the season for the Lady Statesmen and 12th in a row dating back to last season.

Making matters worse was the fact the Lady Statesmen are currently without two starters. Point guard Justyne Sublett has missed the last three games due to illness, while center Amber Crumbie did not play Wednesday due to a concussion.

Lincoln Trail (0-9) will have two more opportunities to get in the win column before the end of the year. The Lady Statesmen will play at Parkland College Dec. 17 at 4 p.m., then will play at St. Louis Community College Dec. 19 at 5:30 p.m.
