Statesmen win pair at Rotary Classic
12/6/2011

A longer than expected layoff allowed Lincoln Trail College's men's basketball team a chance to correct some of the issues that had plagued them during the early part of the season.

Due to their game with Aim High Prep being cancelled Nov. 29, Lincoln Trail had not played since a loss at Illinois Central College on Nov. 21. But, the extra time paid off, as the Statesmen picked up a pair of wins over the weekend at the Olney Rotary Classic. Lincoln Trail pulled out a 95-90 win over Danville Area College in overtime Friday, then rolled over Aim High Prep Saturday, 105-67.

"Our young people are starting to figure out you have to give effort for 40 minutes," LTC head coach Kevin Emerick said. "They also realize they have to do it in practice, too and they are starting to see the benefits of it."

In Friday's game, the Statesmen overcame an eight-point halftime deficit, then saw a late lead disappear at the end of regulation, but were able to come back and get a win.

Lincoln Trail was down 44-36 at halftime, but rallied and had a lead late in regulation, only to see Danville Area tie the game and force overtime. Danville Area carried the momentum into a four-point lead early in overtime, but LTC outscored DACC 13-8 over the length of the extra session to get the victory.

"We needed to get that win on Friday," Emerick said. "We lost to them twice last year, so to get out on the right foot against them was good. The kids never quit and we just kept fighting."

Rob Reed paced LTC with 27 points, seven steals, five assists, two blocked shots and one rebound, while Delvon Brown posted 14 points, three rebounds, two steals and one assist. Ilyas Salsanov contributed 10 points, three rebounds, two assists and one steal, Angelo Williams netted eight points, six rebounds and one blocked shot, Jason Jordan totaled eight points, four rebounds, three blocked shots and two assists, Mike Anderson chipped in with eight points, three rebounds, two assists and one steal, Teddy Maris added eight points, two steals, one rebound and one assist, T.J. Grant collected eight points, two steals and one assist and JoJo Hart had four points, three rebounds and two assists.

"Everybody contributed Friday night," Emerick said. "Rob had a great weekend on both ends of the floor. Delvon stepped up and had a great Friday, giving us some big minutes and production and Ilyas played well Friday."

On Saturday, Lincoln Trail was in control from the outset, as they raced out to a 63-26 halftime lead and coasted to the easy win.

"The kids came out and took care of business Saturday," Emerick said. "They played well for the second straight night, which was nice to see."

Five players reached double figures for the Statesmen, led by Maris with 19 points, four rebounds and two steals. Reed posted 13 points, five assists, three steals and one rebound, Anderson totaled 12 points, seven rebounds, four assists and two steals, Jordan contributed 12 points, five rebounds and two assists, Hart collected 12 points, three assists, two rebounds and one steal, Isaac Wodajo netted eight points, five assists and one rebound, former Oblong standout Drew Morecraft added seven points, two steals and one rebound, Errol Townsend had seven points and two rebounds, Brown chipped in with six points, two rebounds and two steals, Williams had four points, six rebounds and one blocked shot, Jake Frazier had two points, four rebounds and three blocked shots, Salsanov had two points, two steals and one assist and Christian Jugah had one point, one rebound and one steal.

"We had good fan support this weekend," Emerick said. "A lot of people made the trip over to Olney and it was nice to see those people in the stands. It almost felt like a couple of home games for us."

Lincoln Trail (4-4) will play at Mineral Area (Mo.) College Friday at 7 p.m.
