Statesmen falter in second half in 101-75 road loss to Kennedy-King
11/21/2011

Keeping their opposition off the scoreboard has proved difficult for Lincoln Trail College's men's basketball team so far this season.

As a result, the Statesmen tried to switch things up on the defensive end by going to a zone Thursday night at Kennedy-King College. It worked for a while, but eventually the host squad made adjustments and were able to pull away for a 101-75 victory.

"We played a zone and the kids did a great job with it for the first 15 minutes," LTC head coach Kevin Emerick said. "They made some adjustments and we didn't do a good job adjusting to their counter. The kids played hard though and never quit."

Lincoln Trail built up a 38-27 lead over the first 15 minutes of the game, but Kennedy-King closed the first half on a 22-4 run to take a 49-42 lead at halftime.

The Statesmen closed the gap to 53-49 early in the second half, but missed six free throws during that stretch, preventing them from drawing any closer. Kennedy-King was able to push their lead back to double figures and their advantage hovered around 12 points most of the second half, until they made free throws down the stretch to put the game out of reach.

"We have got to get better on the defensive end," Emerick said. "We had to go man and start taking chances to get back in the game and they took advantage. I take it personally. I have to do a better job teaching these kids defensive

principles. I believe this is the first time in my coaching career one of my teams has given up 90 or more points in back-to-back games."

Jake Frazier (Niles, Mich.) topped LTC with 13 points and six rebounds, while Christian Jugah (Lagos, Nigeria) contributed 12 points and five rebounds.

"Jake had a good night in the paint and we got Christian going, which was good to see," Emerick said. "There were some positives to take from this game."

Lincoln Trail (2-3) will play at Illinois Central College Monday at 7 p.m.
