Statesmen fall to South Suburban, 91-74
11/17/2011
JOSH BROWN Sports Editor
Just when you solve one problem, another always seems to arise.
Lincoln Trail College's men's basketball team spent the past week working on taking care of the basketball and handling full-court pressure following their first loss of the season.
The Statesmen did a better job of taking care of the ball, but their defense let them down Saturday in a 91-74 loss to visiting South Suburban College.
"Our inexperience is really showing, especially on defense," LTC head coach Kevin Emerick said. "We handled pressure a lot better, but we just couldn't defend anybody in the half-court or full-court."
Lincoln Trail allowed South Suburban - who is ranked No. 9 in the NJCAA Division II poll - to shoot 50 percent from the floor in the game and compounded their problems by shooting just 30 percent themselves in the loss.
"They are a good basketball team and they are well-coached," Emerick said. "You can't play halfway against those guys."
The Statesmen fell behind right off the bat Saturday and never held a lead. A three-pointer by DeAndre McCamey - the younger brother of former University of Illinois standout Demetri McCamey - gave South Suburban a 3-0 lead at the 19:06 mark of the first half and they never trailed.
Lincoln Trail got within one a couple of times early, but an 8-0 run by South Suburban gave them a 15-6 advantage with 13:55 to play. The Bulldogs were able to stretch their lead to 12, 22-10, with 11:47 remaining, but a 16-7 spurt by the Statesmen closed the gap to 29-26 with 5:36 left before halftime.
South Suburban responded with a 14-5 run to get their lead back to 12, 43-31, but Mike Anderson (Bloomfield, Conn.) scored six of the last eight points of the half to pull LTC to within 45-37 at intermission.
After South Suburban scored the first basket of the second half, Lincoln Trail reeled off seven straight points to pull within 47-44 with 17:18 to go. South Suburban responded by scoring the next eight points to stretch their lead to 55-44 at the 14:30 mark and the Statesmen would not get any closer than seven the rest of the way.
The final margin was the biggest lead of the game for South Suburban, as they scored the last five points of the contest to pull away.
Turnovers were about the same, with Lincoln Trail committing 15 miscues and South Suburban 14. The Statesmen were exceptional at the free throw line, making 35-41 attempts (85 percent), while South Suburban was 18-26 (69 percent) at the charity stripe.
However, Lincoln Trail made just 17 field goals, while South Suburban made 33. The Statesmen were 12-38 from two-point range (32 percent) and 5-18 from three-point territory (28 percent), while South Suburban connected on 26-47 shots from inside the arc (55 percent) and 7-19 from long range (37 percent).
"We did not do a good job attacking their pressure and our shot selection was not good," Emerick said. "We were taking contested shots and passing up open shots. I think we are playing too many guys trying to find the right combination and we don't have a post presence. It's hard to get shots when you are not getting enough paint touches. We also have to get better at handling screens on the defensive end."
Anderson paced LTC with 20 points, three rebounds and two steals, while Jason Jordan (South Bend, Ind.) posted 10 points, nine rebounds, one steal and one blocked shot. T.J. Grant (South Bend, (Ind.) netted eight points, one rebound and one assist, Teddy Maris (Indianapolis, Ind.) totaled seven points, three rebounds, two assists and one steal, Isaac Wodajo (Milwaukee, Wis.) contributed seven points, three rebounds and one assist, Ilyas Salsanov (Minsk, Belarus) added six points, five rebounds and one steal, JoJo Hart (Herrin, Ill.) had six points and one rebound, Rob Reed (South Bend, Ind.) had four points and four rebounds, Jacob Frazier (Niles, Mich.) collected two points, five rebounds, three blocked shots and one steal, Oblong product Drew Morecraft had two points and one assist and Angelo Williams (South Bend, Ind.) scored two points.
Michael Harris led South Suburban with 20 points, six rebounds, four assists and one steal, while Sultan Muhammad posted 18 points, eight rebounds and one steal. McCamey added 15 points, two rebounds and two assists for the Bulldogs.
"Some of our weaknesses are being exposed," Emerick said. "There was a lot of immaturity out there and they guys are really showing their youth. But we have smart guys and they know what we need to work on and are working to get better."
Lincoln Trail (2-2) will hit the road for the first time this week, when they travel to Chicago to take on Kennedy-King College Thursday at 7 p.m.
"We have some tough games coming up on the road," Emerick said. "It's going to be a challenge for us, but we wanted to schedule these games to find out where we need to improve. We just have to be patient and keep working on things."
