Lady Statesmen lose to No. 14 State Fair CC, 87-56
11/11/2011
JOSH BROWN Sports Editor
Another strong opponent, another lopsided loss for Lincoln Trail College's women's basketball team.
Turnovers once again plagued the Lady Statesmen, leading to an early hole they could not dig out of, on their way to an 87-56 loss to 14th-ranked State Fair Community College in the home opener for LTC Wednesday night.
Lincoln Trail started well, jumping out to a 5-2 lead in the first minute and a half and still held a 9-8 lead at the 16:33 mark of the first half. However, State Fair responded with six straight points to start a 16-4 run that gave the Lady Roadrunners a 24-13 lead with 6:59 remaining and they would never trail again.
State Fair continued to stretch their lead in the first half, including scoring 10 of the final 12 points to take a 43-22 lead at halftime.
The wide margin at halftime was helped largely by turnovers by LTC, as they committed 28 miscues in the first 20 minutes and 40 for the game.
"The frustrating thing about our turnovers was the majority of them were unforced," LTC head coach Stacey White said. "It is something we have to work on. We have the ability to handle pressure, we just get too worked up. When we would slow it down, clear out or beat the pressure with the pass instead of trying to dribble through it, we did fine."
The Lady Statesmen did play better in the second half, but an early barrage of three-pointers by State Fair squashed any thoughts of a LTC comeback. State Fair started the second half on a 15-3 run to increase their advantage to 58-25 with 17:05 left in the game and the Lady Statesmen would not get any closer than 29 points the rest of the way. State Fair's biggest lead was 36, which they reached with just under three minutes remaining.
"Offensively, we did run our offensive sets well when we got in them and did a good job looking inside," White said. "We just have to figure out how to get through that initial pressure. Once they pulled their pressure back, we became more confident because the girls know how to handle things in the half-court."
A rough night shooting also plagued the Lady Statesmen, as they made just 19-63 field goal attempts (30 percent), including 18-51 from two-point range (35 percent) and 1-12 from three-point range (8 percent). Meanwhile, State Fair made 40 percent of their shots from the floor (31-77), which included a 23-53 performance from inside the arc (43 percent) and an 8-24 effort from beyond the arc (33 percent). Each team shot 17-24 (71 percent) from the free throw line.
Despite their struggles, one area the Lady Statesmen did have success was rebounding, as they won the battle of the boards, 51-47. They also handed out 12 assists on their 19 made baskets.
"We did some positive things tonight," White said. "We outrebounded them and shared the ball well."
Leading the way for LTC was Justyne Sublett (Louisville, Ky.), who nearly recorded a triple-double in her first home game for the Lady Statesmen, posting 20 points, 12 rebounds, eight assists and one steal.
"Justyne is one of those players that not only benefit you from scoring, but also the hustle plays and all other aspects," White said.
Amber Crumbie (Lexington, Ky.) netted 13 points, five rebounds and two blocked shots, Kristien Malone (Indianapolis, Ind.) totaled nine points, 14 rebounds, two blocked shots, one assist and one steal, Alex Morgan (Clayton, Ind.) contributed four points, six rebounds and one assist, Erica Phifer (Indianapolis, Ind.) added four points, five rebounds and one steal, Ayanna Smith (Indianapolis, Ind.) had two points, two rebounds, two assists and one steal, DeAsia Phillips (Evansville, Ind.) had two points, two rebounds and two steals and Kelsie Coleman (Danville, Ill.) had two points and two rebounds.
"Kristien is a great rebounder, has great control of her body and has great leaping ability," White said. "Amber did a good job in the post, but has to get used to the contact and work of finishing. She is very strong, but doesn't know how to use it yet. When she does, she should be a force."
Four players reached double figures for State Fair, led by Ariel Easton with 25 points, four steals, three rebounds and one assist. Alexas Brown posted 15 points, five steals, four assists and three rebounds, Jamie Buehrig added 14 points, nine rebounds and one assist and Cassandra Moore had 11 points, six rebounds and two steals.
Lincoln Trail (0-2) will play Cincinnati State in the Cincinnati State Classic Friday at 6 p.m. The Lady Statesmen will also play Schoolcraft, Mich. Saturday at noon. in the Cincinnati State Classic.
"I am still very confident in this group," White said. "I know the ability they have, now it is just a matter of getting it out of them."
