Statesmen split with Summit Christian
11/08/11
JOSH BROWN Sports Editor
It was the tale of two games for Lincoln Trail College's men's basketball team this weekend.
Following an upset win over 10th-ranked Three Rivers Tuesday in their season opener, the Statesmen hosted Summit Christian Academy, a prep school based in East Lansing, Mich., for two games over the weekend.
On Friday, a balanced scoring effort led the Statesmen to a 99-83 victory, but on Sunday, Summit Christian turned the tables to pick up a 75-69 win.
"Summit is a well-coached team and have some talented kids," LTC head coach Kevin Emerick said. "We beat them Friday, then we showed up today and thought we were going to beat them again. You have to show up to play every night. We learned that lesson the hard way."
In Friday's game, 14 players saw action for Lincoln Trail and 13 scored, including five in double figures. Three more players scored seven points apiece, while the other five scored between two and six points.
The game was close during the early stages, with Lincoln Trail grabbing an 18-14 during the first seven minutes. The Statesmen were able to extend their lead to 42-31 with about eight minutes left in the first half, then outscored Summit Christian 10-6 the rest of the way to take a 52-37 lead at halftime.
The two teams played pretty even in the second half, with Lincoln Trail outscoring Summit Christian 47-46 to secure the win.
Mike Anderson (Bloomfield, Conn.) paced LTC with 14 points, three steals, three assists, two rebounds and one blocked shot, while Jason Jordan (South Bend, Ind.) posted 11 points, three assists, one rebound and one blocked shot. Teddy Maris (Indianapolis, Ind.) netted 11 points, two assists, one rebound, one steal and one blocked shot, Ilyas Salsanov (Minsk, Belarus) contributed 11 points and two rebounds, Oblong grad Drew Morecraft added 10 points, one rebound and one steal, Jacob Frazier (Niles, Mich.) totaled seven points, 12 rebounds, six blocked shots, two assists and one steal, Angelo Williams (South Bend, Ind.) chipped in with seven points and four rebounds, T.J. Grant (South Bend, Ind.) had seven points, two rebounds, two assists and one steal, Errol Townsend (Hartford, Conn.) had six points, four rebounds, one assist and one blocked shot, Christian Jugah (Lagos, Nigeria) had five points, two rebounds, one steal and one blocked shot, Rob Reed (South Bend, Ind.) and Isaac Wodajo (Milwaukee, Wisc.) had four points, two assists, one rebound and one steal apiece and JoJo Hart (Herrin, Ill.) had two points and one assist.
Four players reached double figures for Summit Christian, led by Dominez Burnett with 16. Trevon Seymore tossed in 15 points, Jeremiah Ingram netted 12 and Andrew Jordan added 10.
After a 53 percent shooting peformance on Friday (31-58), including a 61 percent effort (28-46) from two-point range, the Statesmen made just 32 percent of their shots (24-75) in Sunday's matinee.
In Friday's win, Lincoln Trail attempted just 12 three-pointers, but on Sunday, the Statesmen launched 34 shots from beyond the arc. While they made 11 of them, they also made just 13 of 41 shots from inside the arc. The Statesmen also made just 10-19 free throws Sunday, after connecting on 34-53 in Friday night's game.
"We didn't get hardly any post touches," Emerick said, "We took a lot of bad shots, a lot of hurried and contested shots. We missed a lot of layups, we weren't patient in our offense and weren't under control going to the basket."
Lincoln Trail fell behind 5-0 right out of the gate and would battle from behind the entire game. The Statesmen trailed 11-3 five minutes into the game, but a 13-6 LTC closed the gap to 17-16 with 9:50 left in the first half.
Summit Christian would score the next six points to push their lead back to 23-16, but LTC would score five straight to cut the deficit to 23-21. Summit Christian would follow with an 8-1 run to stretch the lead to 31-22 with 6:48 left, only to see LTC rip off an 8-1 run to pull within 32-30 with 4:53 to go.
Summit Christian would then reel off the next eight points to take a 40-30 lead, starting a 12-5 spurt to end the half to give them a 44-35 advantage at halftime.
They would continue their run in the second half, scoring the first eight points for a 52-35 lead and they would take their biggest lead of the game, 66-44, with 7:09 remaining.
Lincoln Trail would respond, putting together a 17-4 run over the next four minutes to cut the deficit to 70-61 with 2:53 to play.
Summit Christian still held a 10-point lead with 1:55 left, but three-pointers by Maris and Wodajo - sandwiched around a SCA free throw - closed the gap to 74-69 with 40 seconds left. Another SCA free throw with 33.4 seconds left would complete the scoring.
The Statesmen four long-range shots in the final 30 seconds, but could not get any of them to drop, as they suffered their first loss of the season.
"We schedule these games to try to get our guys to learn and adjust," Emerick said. "We tried to leave them out there and fight through it and adjust, but we just did not make adjustments. We have worked on and talked about the kind of defensive pressure they put on us, but we just didn't do a good job handling it. We used full-court press of our own late and it helped, but we should have never been in that situation."
In addition to the poor shooting, the Statesmen committed 26 turnovers, including 18 in the first half.
Summit Christian also turned the ball over 26 times, but they were able to offset it by making 25-53 shots inside the arc (47 percent) and 19-32 free throws (59 percent).
"They ran their offense much better than Friday and were more selective in their offense," Emerick said. "Along with our lack of defensive focus and discipline, that really changed the game."
Jason Jordan led LTC with 16 points, 10 rebounds and two assists, while Maris totaled 16 points - but did it on 6-22 shooting - along with six steals, four rebounds and one assist. Wodajo bagged five three-pointers for 15 points, in addition to four rebounds, four assists and one steal, Reed netted eight points, four rebounds, three blocked shots, two steals and two assists, Delvon Brown (South Bend, Ind.) posted five points and three rebounds, Frazier had only three points, six rebounds and one blocked shot, as he was saddled with foul trouble throughout the game, Grant added two points, five rebounds, three steals and three assists, Hart had two points, four rebounds and two assists and Morecraft had two points and one rebound.
Andrew Jordan topped Summit Christian with 25 points, including 18 in the first half, 11 rebounds, seven steals, two blocked shots and one assist, while Burnett posted 12 points, nine rebounds, two steals and one assist. Terry Starks added 10 points, three rebounds, two steals and one assist, Seymore had eight points, nine rebounds, two steals, two blocked shots and one assist and Ingram had eight points, six rebounds, three blocked shots, two assists and one steal.
Emerick knows his team can and will get better and most of the mistakes they are making early in the season are correctable.
"I don't like to make excuses, but the kids are young and only playing their third game," Emerick said. "We played like an inexperienced team tonight. We made a nice run at the end to get back in it and I told them I appreciated the effort the last five minutes, but we need that kind of effort the first 35 minutes, too."
Lincoln Trail (2-1) is scheduled to play host to New Creations Academy Thursday at 7 p.m., but the status of that game is currently up in the air, according to Emerick. New Creations recently had some defections from the program - including their coach - but now have a new coach and are in the process of filling out their roster.
The Statesmen will play host to South Suburban College Saturday at 4 p.m.
