General Education Assessment
General Education Assessment is the broadest and most complex of all the assessment types. The General Education Outcomes cover skills that each student should know, value and be able to demonstrate when he/she graduates from IECC. Those skills include reading comprehension, written and oral communication, critical thinking, reasoning, solving problems using logic, mathematics, technology, and creative thinking, information and technology literacy, engaging in lifelong learning and participating as responsible members of a culturally diversified global society.
Because these outcomes are difficult to assess with a single tool, IECC has chosen to assess one or two outcomes yearly. This will ensure each outcome will be assessed within 5 years and pertinent, useful results will be given to the instructors of the General Education courses so that improvements, if needed, can be made to learning and instruction. Once all six General Education Outcomes have been assessed, then the cycle will begin again.
The assessment tool for General Education Assessment will be an assignment already a part of the faculty’s course syllabus. The assignment will be evaluated using a common rubric developed by General Education Faculty. This will ensure that the criteria set for the General Education skills will be assessed within that chosen assignment. This method of assessment in the classroom of a representative population of the students will give the General Education Faculty useful data on the skill retention of students after completing a particular General Education Course.
